Art Guidelines

To minimize artwork charges & job delays, and to maximize the quality of your finished product, please read thoroughly and adhere to the following guidelines:

General:

Original, editable electronic art with layers intact is preferred. Minor changes to accommodate production requirements or future modifications – such as phone or address changes – are often required and can not be made from derivitive formats such as .eps, .tif, .bmp, .png, .gif or .jpg which often have inferior resolution.
Line (or 'vector') Vector Art created by a drawing programs such as Illustrator produce a far cleaner product than scanned, bit-mapped or rasterized formats (.tif, .gif, png or .jpg.) Vector art can be enlarged to any size without loss of resolution or a "jagged edges" appearance.
Scanned or pixel-based images (such as .tif, .bmp, .gif or .jpg) created by Adobe Photoshop — or consumer "paint" programs, or scanned or raster art must have a resolution of at least 300 ppi (pixels per inch) for complex color figures such as photos. 600 dpi is necessary for fine line art or text. Web art (normally about 100 dpi) is not acceptable for print applications. A rule of thumb is that an image should appear on your computer screen at least 3 to 6 times larger than its intended size on a printed page
Include a 1/8" Bleed on all artwork with printing that extends to the edge of the finished piece.
Trimming is not an exact science. Please make sure that there is at least an 1/8" - 1/4" Margin between important text or graphic elements and the edge. A 1/4" is recommended.
FONTS — PLEASE GIVE US THE NAME, OR SEND COPIES OF, ALL FONTS USED! It can easily take an hour or more of chargeable time looking for a font match. If it is a low-res web or fax image, it is nearly impossible. While we have access to thousands of fonts, we may not have yours. If we do not have your font(s), artwork fonts will need to be converted to outlines. Both Mac and PC fonts are supported.
If you can not meet the above guidelines, we will do our best to work with the artwork you have within the time and money budgeted for the project.

Formats Not Acceptable — Acceptable formats are listed below. "v." below refers to the latest version supported:

Artwork create in consumer-grade programs are not robust enough for professional printing and can be used only as guidelines from which to recreate from scratch. High-resolution .PDF or .EPS filed created from these programs may be usable.
Examples of unsupported, consumer-grade programs include: Word, Powerpoint, CorelDraw. In Publisher, a .PDF file using the "Publish as PDF" with the "Commercial Press" option selection may be usable.

Acceptable Formats — Acceptable formats are listed below. "v." below refers to the latest version supported:

Page Layout Programs (Please include all fonts and linked graphics.):

InDesign v. CS6 or earlier.
QuarkXpress v. 8.0 or earlier.

Line or Vector Art Programs

Adobe Illustrator v. CS6 or earlier.
Adobe Freehand v. MX or earlier.
Otherwise, an .EPS file format, an export option in most drawing programs.

Image Programs

Photoshop v. CS6 or earlier. Do not flatten. Include all layers. Send copies of all fonts!
Image file formats: .tif, .pct, .bmp, .png or .jpg with a resolution of 600 dpi or higher. A .TIF format is the most accurate and complete (with a very large file size) and is preferred.

Otherwise...

Adobe Acrobat PDF/X-1a – This high-resolution PDF format is designed to be compatible with most commercial printing processes. It can be created from most programs. A PDF does not, however lend itself easily to artwork adjustments that may be necessary.

If you can not meet the above guidelines, we will do our best to work with the artwork you have within the time and money budgeted for the project.
